While much of the coverage has been focused on its super-fast, super-luxurious (and super-expensive) Air Sapphire sedan, a soon-to-be-introduced SUV is already making headlines of its own.
A more convenient design
Tesla has really cornered the EV market in terms of charging stations, installing them in parking lots nationwide and making it simple for drivers to recharge while they’re running errands.
But this only works if the vehicle in question has the right charge port. For Lucid, this presented an opportunity to unveil its Gravity SUV with a Tesla-compatible connector.
It’s worth noting, of course, that Lucid isn’t the only EV maker that has adopted this strategy. Tesla ports and connectors are becoming common across the sector, including in the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the R2 SUV expected to be released soon by Rivian.
The Gravity is unique in one way, however. It’s the only non-Tesla vehicle with the port located on the driver’s side at the rear of the vehicle. That’s where Tesla puts its port, so unlike other brands, the new Lucid model won’t cause a traffic jam at Supercharger stations.
A more affordable model
While Lucid said its Gravity model should be on sale by the end of the year and the Tesla-compatible port will be included in models available sometime in 2025, there was no firm announcement regarding its pricing. The company did, however, reference an SUV currently in development that is expected to come with a base price under $50,000.
That mid-size vehicle is currently scheduled to be introduced in about two years and should be a direct competitor with the Tesla Model Y.
