But certified sommelier Brianne Cohen recently compiled a list of other regions that give the Napa Valley a run for its money.
The Golden State is on top
Whether you want to stock your wine cellar or just go out for a relaxing wine-tasting experience, finding the right winery is key. And there’s no doubt that California has more than its share of compelling options. In fact, a number of taste tests show that wines from certain areas of this state can hold their own against the most exclusive bouquets from France and Italy.
Napa Valley is by far the most recognizable U.S. region for wine and is home to world-renowned wineries like Artesa, Matthiasson, and Quintessa. Then there’s the Sonoma region, which might not have all the hype of Napa Valley but produces some incredible grapes.
Other impressive spots in California include Paso Robles, Lodi, Santa Barbara, and Temecula.
Rounding out the top 5
It might surprise you to learn that grapes grow in all 50 states, even those with particularly hot or cold climates. But that doesn’t mean they’re all equally suited to create a perfectly balanced bottle of wine.
Coming in just behind California are four other states Cohen says wine aficionados should consider:
- Oregon: The Willamette Valley is a laid-back region known for chardonnay and pinot noir.
- Washington: Most of the wines from this state originate in the expansive Columbia Valley.
- Michigan: If you’re in the market for a great white wine, schedule a visit to the Traverse Wine Coast.
- New York: The Finger Lakes region is home to some of the East Coast’s greatest cabernet blanc and pinot noir.
