Automakers from around the world have begun embracing electric vehicle tech in recent years, with a few — like Tesla and Rivian, for example — focusing all their attention on building EVs.

But with inventory rising and public interest plateauing, Wall Street hasn’t been kind to these companies. There’s one exception to the rule, though, and it’s a company you might not have even heard of.

Catch the bus

Big, bulky, yellow school buses seem like they’d be among the last vehicles on the road to embrace electric motors. But with government subsidies available to help offset the massive expense of transitioning from diesel or gas to electric, manufacturers are increasingly taking notice.

That brings us to Blue Bird Corp., which has long been a leading bus maker and is currently deep within a transition to electric. And while traditional EV makers are finding it difficult to turn their designs into stock profits, this company seems to have found an advantageous niche.

Tracking the trend

Sure, you could say that an influx of federal cash is a big part of Blue Bird’s success. But that’s just part of the equation. Since buses only operate a few hours a day and stick to relatively short routes, the limited range of electric motors isn’t as much of an issue for this class of vehicle.

And investors are clearly smitten with the idea, as these stats show:

  • The company’s shares have increased a whopping 116% over the course of 2024.
  • Revenue numbers advanced 15% during last quarter compared to a year earlier.
  • Second-quarter profits are similarly strong, more than tripling to 89 cents per share.

There’s no guarantee that this winning streak will continue … but with orders backing up and selling at a record pace, it seems the era of electric buses is dawning.
