As the very not democratically elected President of Russia (hello Navalny), Vladimir Putin continues his regime's war in Ukraine; the aerial bombardment of the city of Mariupol continues as Ukraine offers a prisoner exchange for the remaining soldiers trapped in a steel mill.

The Ukrainian soldiers trapped in Mariupol aren't from a normal regiment but are of the white supremacist, neo-Nazi Azov Special Forces Regiment of the Ukrainian National Guard. After its formation in 2014, the Ukrainian government backed the unit during battles with pro-Russian separatists as its military was too weak to deal with fighting.

In 2015, Andriy Diachenko, the spokesperson for the regiment admitted anywhere between 10-20 percent of the unit's recruits were Nazis. Despite denying the unit adheres to Nazi ideology, Nazi symbols appear on the uniforms, rifles, and bodies of Zaov members. According to the Nation in 2019, the Azov unit is the only neo-Nazi formation in a modern nation's armed forces.

The Azov Regiment recently released photos of wounded soldiers in Mariupol, asking for help from the United Nations and Red Cross. The wives of two soldiers trapped in the Azovstal steel mill recently spoke with Pope Francis to get the soldiers to safety and not allow them to fall into Russian captivity.
