U.S. intelligence officials determined that the prince was instrumental in orchestrating the 2018 murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, who had been an outspoken critic of the Saudi regime.
Despite Biden’s obvious motivation to convince the nation to increase oil production amid stubbornly high fuel prices, critics were outraged that the U.S. president would grant bin Salman a meeting that could legitimize him on the world stage.
Nevertheless, Biden assured the American people that he was firm with the prince when it came to the subject of Khashoggi’s death.
“I raised it at the top of the meeting, making it clear what I thought of it at the time, and what I think of it now,” he said.
Although bin Salman claimed that he didn’t personally order Khashoggi’s murder, Biden said: “I indicated I thought he was.”
While plenty of Americans expressed disappointment that the president would agree to visit Saudi Arabia, Khashoggi’s fiancee offered perhaps the most compelling criticism. In a tweet on Friday, Hatice Cengiz reacted to what appeared to be a warm greeting between Biden and bin Salman by imagining how Khashoggi would respond.
“Hey [Biden], is this the accountability you promised for my murder?” she wrote. “The blood of MBS’s next victim is on your hands.”
